I´ve
noticed some of my visitors here from the US, Canada and Russia been googeling the
Audio Technica AT-RMX 64 mixing consol. So I thought it would be of interest
writing a few lines about it. Here is my story.
I got it
about two years ago for almost no money at all. I just bought it, thinking I
might have use for some extra preamps but after some searching I discovered it
had quit a reputation. For being solid and probably the best 4track cassette
recorder ever made. Also pretty expensive in the early eighties, my manual is
dated 1984. I was told by the guy I bought it from that he got from his music teacher.
Oh yea, I
found this picture of it while reading the John L Sayer forum. http://www.johnlsayers.com/Pages/Hello_Testing.htm
The
condition is good, I cleaned it a bit and bought a defluxer on ebay. Everything
works except for the rew motor. So you have to turn the tape or use a pencil.
I´ve done
some preamp test between my digi design 002r and the consol and I like how they
sound. They are a bit more “thick” in the low end, more bass, and sound good on
acoustic guitars with a condenser mic. I have no idea if it is transformer balanced
mic amplifiers or IC? It is really heavy thou. Anybody know how it is build?
The mechanic
parts are very stable and works well, no speed or pitch issues during recording
or playback.
I hope on
recording this band I know of, using pretty much nothing but this console. I
think it will be worth the effort. Now I use it for mixdowns and as extra
preamps. I also made this video about the console. It’s in Swedish but you can
always enjoy the footage.

you got some drum tracks or whatever you feel you want to mixdown on tape. To add
some grit, analog air, saturation to
your tracks.
